Frequently Asked Questions About the Electric Vehicle Charging Program
General program questions
How is Eversource supporting EVs?
If I have multiple buildings that share a parking lot, can the charging station installation overlap?
How many charging stations can my site have?
As part of the Eversource EV charging station launch, we are interested in deploying our infrastructure at scale. To that end, we have developed the following approaches. The availability of those programs can vary based on current funding.
Level 2 Chargers:
Each site must have a minimum of two Level 2 charging ports installed. The total number of ports can vary depending on several factors, including:
- Existing electrical infrastructure
- Physical space in the parking area
- Budget
- Your installer can work with you to determine the optimal number of chargers based on these considerations to meet your goals
DCFC Chargers:
Level III (DC Fast Charging): The infrastructure will be put in place to support at least one Level III dual-port station.
Please work with your installer to determine the infrastructure needed to support your project.
Where will the charging stations be placed?
The charging station should be located close to the Eversource-owned electric equipment.
A charging station can be either pedestal- or wall-mounted.
Your installer will help determine the best location for chargers on your property and should utilize best practices for EV charging installations.
Who will own and operate the charging station?
You will own and operate the charging stations and be responsible for usage, operation and maintenance costs as well as the infrastructure located on your property. Eversource will own and maintain the utility infrastructure.
Questions about process
What work will Eversource manage?
Eversource will manage work associated with upgrades needed to the utility infrastructure.
What is my cost?
Which part of the development am I responsible for?
Who is responsible for procuring and covering the cost of the necessary permits and inspections?
- Eversource owned infrastructure: Eversource is responsible for procuring and covering the costs of permits and inspections.
- Site Host owned infrastructure: The customer's contractor is responsible for procuring and covering the costs of permits and inspections. These costs are allowable to be included with other qualifying costs to be reimbursed by the program rebates.
- Qualified Chargers: procured and covered by the Site Host and are allowable costs to be reimbursed in part by the program rebate.
How long does a typical deployment take?
Who pays for the cost of energy?
Although the customer is responsible for paying the utility bill, there are several options for how electric vehicle users pay for the service of charging their car. These options vary from direct pass-through to charging by the hour. Your installer will help guide you through the best billing option for you.
Questions about funding
What funding is available?
The Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities (DPU) approved $188 million for the deployment of EV charging stations in our service territory in Massachusetts. This investment supports the provision of the infrastructure for residential and commercial charging stations. A portion of this funding is dedicated to EV charging at Public and Workplace, Multi Unit Dwellings, and Municipal locations as well as for businesses with vehicle fleets.
Can the funding apply to charging stations that are already installed?
