Budget Billing evens out your energy bills by dividing your annual electric and gas usage into level monthly payments — alleviating payment spikes in high usage months.

How It Works*

• The initial monthly budget payment amount is based on your last 12 or six months of energy use divided by 11 and multiplied by the current rate.
• We review your account regularly and will adjust your payment amount if needed based on your actual energy use or rate changes.
• You'll be automatically re-enrolled each year unless you opt out.

What happens in the 12th month?

This is when we compare what you paid during your budget plan with how much energy you used over the year. One of three things will happen:

• If you owe an amount less than or equal to the monthly budget payment amount reflected on your prior month’s bill - You’ll be billed for the difference. This amount will not be more than your prior month’s budget payment amount.
• If you owe more than your monthly budget payment amount - You’ll only be billed an amount equal to your prior budget amount. The rollover amount will be added to your new budget plan and spread across the next 11 months.
• If you overpaid - No payment will be due. The credit will be applied to your next bill. Then moving forward, you’ll be charged your newly calculated Budget Billing amount for that next cycle. 

*Process as of May 14, 2026. Customers enrolled in Budget Billing before this day will have different calculations until next enrollment.

Eligibility

You can enroll if:

• You've had electric or gas heating service at your current address for at least 12 months
• You've had non-heating gas service at your current address for at least six months
• Your account is in good standing (not in collections or past due)
• You’ve chosen Eversource or a different electric or gas supplier

After you enroll, Budget Billing will begin with your next bill.
