Meeting Local Energy Needs
The Dorchester Energy Project is one of several projects in Metro-Boston needed to support the demand for reliable electricity. As neighborhoods in Boston continue to grow, so do its energy needs.
Eversource is committed to providing customers with safe and reliable power every day. To help meet this commitment and our communities' evolving energy needs, Eversource must make improvements to the existing and aging electric grid that powers our everyday lives.
These upgrades will not only ensure customers have equitable access to the benefits of a reliable electric system but also enable the local communities to integrate clean energy technologies such as solar and battery storage.
Proposed Project Overview
To address the distinct needs of our communities, Eversource is proposing a series of connected infrastructure projects to upgrade the electric system with more modern equipment. If approved, proposed project activity and work locations will vary depending on the component of the project:
- Installing new underground electric transmission lines across Dorchester, Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain, Mattapan, Roslindale and West Roxbury.
- Upgrading electric distribution lines, connecting them from the substations to customers in Dorchester, Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain, Mattapan, Roslindale and West Roxbury to help increase energy supply and reliability in the area.
- Constructing a new electrical substation in Dorchester to alleviate existing nearby substations that have reached their capacity and to ensure we reliably power our customers now and into the future.
Anticipated Timeline
- Community engagement: 2023-present
- Anticipated filing with the Energy Facilities Siting Board (EFSB): 2026
- EFSB review: 2027
- EFSB decision: 2028
- If approved, anticipated construction start: 2028
Our project engagement team is committed to continuously engaging with the community before, during and after the regulatory review process including during the construction phase of any approved project.
Community Engagement
Eversource is committed to working closely with our local neighborhoods including residents, businesses, community organizations and municipal officials as their voices matter in shaping our shared energy future. This includes keeping stakeholders informed about any proposed infrastructure upgrades that could affect their communities and providing meaningful opportunities for community members to engage with the project team, and have their voices heard.
Our engagement and communication goals continue to focus on:
- Community awareness: Keeping residents informed about the upcoming infrastructure upgrades that will affect their communities.
- Inclusive participation: Listening to residents, business owners and community leaders, whose voice matters in shaping the future of our shared infrastructure.
- Transparency and collaboration: Maintaining an open dialogue throughout the upgrade process, ensuring that community needs and concerns are addressed.
